Welcome to the kickoff of Teen Tuesdays! Each week, I’ll feature markets or writing resources for teens. I’m proud to start the series with C. Hope Clark’s free email newsletter, WritingKid, which includes opportunities for writers of various ages, from elementary school through the teen years. Sample market from a recent WritingKid: NEW VOICES YOUNG WRITERS CONTEST. This contest is open to students worldwide, attending public, private, or home schools, between the ages of 11 and 18. The competition is divided into two divisions. The Junior Division is for entrants 11 to 14 years of age, while the Senior Division is for entrants 15 to 18 years of age. Fiction, poetry and nonfiction essay for each age group. Entries will be accepted from November 1 through December 20. | Hope has been providing free information on markets and contests that publish kids and teens for thirteen years. “Kids have few places to research markets/contests where their work is accepted,” she says. “Teachers don't have time to do it, and parents don't know where to start. So when teachers, parents and grandparents who wrote began asking me where they could refer the young writers in their lives, I created WritingKid.“ Besides teen and young writers, teachers use the newsletter, too. “A teacher in northern South Carolina uses the newsletter in her creative writing class each year,” Hope explains. “Since I purchase pieces from kids for the newsletter, she gives them an assignment to write a piece per my guidelines at www.fundsforwriters.com and see if they can get accepted. I love that.” |

WritingKid pays $10-$20 for accepted writing-related essays and articles. Submissions should be 500-550 words. Hope’s advice on getting published in WritingKid? “Read the archives and see what others have written. Then study the guidelines. It's really that simple.”
